The Port of Beaumont Board of Commissioners today voted unanimously to cancel the May 11 Election for an At-Large Position on the board.

Incumbent Commissioner C.A. "Pete” Shelton filed for the race and is unopposed. He will serve a new term on the board starting in May. The board will continue to hold an election for the Ward 2 Position, currently held by Henry Nix, Jr.  Nix did not file for re-election.  However, the race has drawn five candidates – Pat Anderson, John Johnson, Sam Serio, Lester Smith and Dale Dowell.  The race is decided by plurality, with the candidate receiving the move votes winning.  Therefore, no runoff election will be required.
Port Director & CEO Chris Fisher said the cancellation of the election will save the port money on election costs. "That will allow us not to have to administer polling places all across the district, only in Ward 2,” Fisher said.
The commission voted to amend the port’s FY2013 Budget.  The budget amendments included the downward revision of revenue for the port’s grain elevator, and increased the port’s insurance budget to acquire additional insurance for the Orange County Terminal. All items were approved.  All votes were unanimous with all members present.
