Lee E. Smith Appointed to Port of Beaumont Board of Commissioners
Lee E. Smith has been appointed to the board of commissioners of the Port of Beaumont Navigation District. Smith, 60, was appointed by the board at its regular meeting August 27 to fill the unexpired term of E.D. "Bo" Alfred.

Smith retired as an office services clerk for Ameripol Synpol Corp., where he was employed for 34 years. A native of Madison County, Texas, and 58-year resident of Beaumont, Smith is a graduate of Prairie View A&M University. Smith and his wife, LaRue, have one daughter, Lesia Linton, who resides in Houston.

Smith is a member of the board of directors of the L.L. Melton YMCA, the Beaumont chapter of the NAACP, and the Charlton-Pollard High School Alumni Association. He is a trustee and usher for Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, and serves as chaplain of American Legion Dorie E. Miller Post #817.
Smith is scheduled to take the oath of office for his new position at a board meeting September 16. He will serve until the next election, which is scheduled for May, 2003.
Alfred resigned his seat at port commissioner after he won election as Jefferson County Precinct 4 Commissioner. Alfred, who represented Ward 3 on the port commission since 1998, was appointed early to the county post because he has no opponent in the general election.
